WATER QUALITY SPECIALST

Job Overview:
We are seeking a skilled and dedicated Water Quality Specialist to join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for learning and managing our extensive water distribution system, ensuring water quality, and maintaining operational efficiency across 11 counties. This role requires a combination of technical expertise, physical capability, and a commitment to public safety.

Key Responsibilities:

  • System Management: Learn and oversee the operation of a water distribution system covering nearly 1,000 miles of pipe, including understanding water flow dynamics and system infrastructure.

  • Valve Operation: Adjust and maintain valves to control water flow throughout the system, ensuring optimal performance and response to system demands.

  • Electrical Maintenance: Perform basic electrical work on motors and pumps that drive the water system, including troubleshooting and minor repairs.

  • Water Tower Inspection: Climb and inspect water towers to assess structural integrity, perform maintenance, and ensure compliance with safety and quality standards.

  • Water Quality Monitoring: Conduct regular testing and analysis to ensure water quality meets regulatory standards and public health requirements.

  • Emergency Response: Respond to system issues, leaks, or outages when on-call one week per month.

  • Documentation: Maintain accurate records of system operations, maintenance activities, and water quality reports.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Degree in environmental science, civil or electrical engineering, or a related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred.

  • Experience:

    • Knowledge of water distribution systems, including pipe networks, valves, and pumps (experience with large-scale systems preferred).

    • Basic electrical experience, particularly with motor-driven systems or pump maintenance.

    • Familiarity with water quality testing and regulatory compliance (e.g., EPA or state standards).

  • Skills and Abilities:

    • Ability to learn complex systems quickly and apply knowledge effectively.

    • Physical fitness to climb water towers and perform fieldwork in various weather conditions.

    • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.

    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Certifications:

    • Valid driver’s license required.

    • Distribution Service License preferred.

  • Physical Requirements: Ability to lift up to 40 lbs., climb heights, and work in confined spaces or outdoor environments.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with GIS or water system mapping software.

  • Previous work in a utility or municipal water system.

  • Familiarity with SCADA systems for water system monitoring.
